Unflattening Nineteenth Century Literature

During the Spring of 2015, Darren Brown was asked to prepare a presentation that was inspired by Nick Sousanis' Unflattening; a presentation that needed to be relevant to nineteenth century American history. No other directions were given.

Because of his interest in literature, Brown began by reading Cathy N. Davidson's Revolution and the Word (1987) and then branched out to other literary issues. His presentation finally focused on the work of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman.

Brown has presented his research at the Michigan Developmental Education Consortium Conference and at the Institute for Innovation in Education Gathering.
